Achieve your goals by visualising your desired future

Projecting yourself into a desired future is one of the most powerful tools we use in coaching. With your imagination 🧠, not with time machines 🌌!

The exercise consists of visualising what you want your future to look like. For some this may seem like wishful thinking or day-dreaming. Think again. Such visualisation helps in many ways.

First, it helps you to clarify your goal(s).

Second, it gives you a positive outcome to look forward to. This gives you direction and energy.

Third, it creates an emotional connection to your goals, making them more present in your every day life.

Fourth, it activates your brain and makes it go after this vision. It will give you courage and resilience.

Finally it helps you to lift your head and see your current life from a different perspective. This helps you see more clearly the way to get to your vision.

How can you visualise your desired future?

I know two highly effective ways:

  • Draw your ideal future. Put as much detail into it. Close your eyes and imagine having achieved this vision. Feel this achievement in your body. How does it feel? Break down your vision into smaller goals. Take a single first step right after this. Do not delay! Regularly re-connect to the feeling associated with your desired future. You can for instance regularly look at your drawing and close your eyes and feel the emotion that relates to it.

  • Follow a guided projection. You can try this one here. You must be comfortable being led by someone on a recorded audio.
